Inspiring Journey of Maduranga

Every great journey begins with a role model, and every success story begins with inspiration; someone who has walked the path ahead of you and demonstrated what is possible.
Maduranga, a qualified Quantity Surveyor with more than five years of professional experience, had established a secure career in construction. But deep down, he craved something more creative, something he could genuinely call his own. Maduranga’s guiding light was his uncle, Kularatne
Fernando, another dedicated entrepreneur who had made a reputation for himself in the craft business with the unflinching support of Mother Sri Lanka and its objective to enable local entrepreneurs to turn their interests into viable businesses. Maduranga got a spark while observing his uncle’s close work with the foundation. It was a subtle motivation from within, a drive to create, innovate, and construct something of his own.
“I watched how my uncle transformed his small business into something impactful and he always credited Mother Sri Lanka for helping him grow not just profitably, but sustainably,” Maduranga recalls.
Maduranga made a brave decision in 2020. He started his own business, Indi Crafts, a sole proprietorship inspired by love and creativity. Nestled in the heart of local craftsmanship, Indi Crafts began producing authentic handmade Sri Lankan products: coasters, rulers, screen-printed products, and more indicating different stories.
However, as any entrepreneur understands, developing a product is only half of the struggle. Finding a platform to showcase and to achieve the market makes all the difference. This is where Mother Sri Lanka stepped in. Maduranga formalized his partnership with the foundation in 2023, which he now considers a turning point in his life.

“Mother Sri Lanka gave me not just, a place to sell, but a vision to grow,” says Maduranga with gratitude.
Mother Sri Lanka did not simply offer him shelf space. It provided creative direction, commercial visibility, a voice in the industry, and a genuine opportunity for sustainability. With their help, Maduranga’s products gained the audience they deserved, and more crucially, he discovered revenue constancy, which is the fuel that any entrepreneur requires to continue developing. With the assistance of Mother Sri Lanka, what began as a family-run business has evolved into a small but, thriving company of four people.
“Because of the exposure and encouragement, I received, I’ve been able to give back not just to my family, but to others who now rely on Indi Crafts for their livelihood,” Maduranga tells with pride.
Maduranga was given the opportunity to showcase his products at Love Sri Lanka festivals and MSL charity gift shop, connect with retailers and distributors interested in supporting youth-led enterprises, and get recognition through media coverage provided by Mother Sri Lanka’s network. This exposure enabled him to sell his products, to establish a customer base, and to gain confidence in his commercial endeavors. Furthermore, Mother Sri Lanka contacted him whenever he needs technical advice on enhancing product design, production efficiency, and safety standards. This was critical to refining his ideas and boosting the market value of his crafts.
“Thanks to Mother Sri Lanka, I learned how to transform my innovative ideas into high-quality products. Their advice has shaped my achievement. Their assistance allowed me to reach more customers, improve my products, and dream bigger. They provided me with a platform, guidance, and confidence to grow.”
Today, Indi Crafts is more than just a business. It represents local ingenuity, and what happens when talent meets opportunity. And at the core of it all is Mother Sri Lanka’s backing, that has transformed an idea into an influence.
“I’ll always be grateful to Mother Sri Lanka. They did more than simply support my business; they also helped mold my future.”
